Law and Art are not so dissimilar. Each is an exercise in interpretation requiring careful study and deliberation of the nuances of human, physical, cultural relationships. Just like a finished work of art, a legal ruling is subject to evaluation and critique, praise or ridicule. Each discipline is a product of the great minds of its predecessors—all of whom developed and advanced theories and practices from generation to generation. More, neither in Law nor in Art is theory enough—practice and application is where any Great Lawyer or Artist proves their salt. Most importantly, to achieve greatness in either law or art, the practitioner must have a deep awareness of the rules and procedures, yet also possess the courage and creativity to challenge convention.

Term of art Collective is an ambitious project that attempts to combine these two disciplines in a way that is as educational as it is evocative. The collective is a group of Artists from around the globe who have used their unique styles to create works of art depicting some of the most famous and well-read cases of American and English jurisprudence.

a word or phrase that takes on a specialized meaning within a specific context or field of study.

Despite preconceptions, the law and Art are not so different. Each field is the product of hours of study and deliberation, requiring careful examination of human, physical, and cultural dynamics. Each applies theory and interpretation to yield an end-result, the value of which determined by the eye of the beholder, the beneficiary, the patron, the prisoner Finally, and in spite of one’s personal valuation, the rule of law, just like a work of art, affects us all, having lasting and profound consequences on the society we live in, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, for pleasure or for pain.

Term of art Collective is an ambitious project wherein individual artists around the globe have been commissioned to create fine art renditions of some of the most famous and well-read cases across American and English Jurisprudence and beyond. As Charles Bukowski once said, “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.” This collection is an embodiment of that adage through works of art that are as educational as they are engaging.

The idea for this project was incepted during law school after too many hours reading, studying, and becoming intimately acquainted with the keynote cases and precedents upon which our legal system is based. Oft forgotten when parsing through the minutiae of a judicial opinion, these cases involved people, stories, and the unique circumstances that set the stage for legal disputes of enormous consequence. The facts of these cases (and maybe more importantly, one’s interpretation of those facts) have become essentially the foundation for the legal principles that all judges and attorneys should know and, in one way or another, society abides by. The more cases I read, the more I thought these stories and their facts lent themselves well to epic depictions and unique visual interpretations in artistic form. Thus, Term of Art Collective was born, wherein a collective of Artists from around the globe have been commissioned to create works of art depicting some of the most famous and well-read cases of American and English jurisprudence.

As Charles Bukowski once said, “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.” This project attempts to illustrate (get it?) just that by featuring works that we hope you find as educational as they are evocative.
